The FDA put a warning label on finasteride that there may be some association with suicidal behavior or suicidal ideation, so I think it’s good that this these side effects are gaining some traction people are going to be aware of it. There’s lots of stories of people taking this drug but not having a discussion of what the possible side effects are, and then experiencing them as a result. So what can you do before you start taking something like finasteride—you want to look at your sex hormones. If someone has low, or even a borderline-low, testosterone, pushing androgens down further is probably not a good idea.
